Mark Rubin, known by his artistic persona “Jew of Oklahoma,” is a legendary multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, producer, and cultural educator whose career spans more than 40 years. A foundational figure in the Americana movement, Rubin has spent his career exploring the intersection of Southern roots music and Jewish identity with a singular, deeply authentic voice.

A founding member of the influential Bad Livers, Rubin helped pioneer a genre-bending blend of bluegrass, punk, jazz, and traditional roots music. His remarkable career has also included years as a beloved late-night host on Austin’s KUT, work with San Antonio conjunto legend Santiago Jiménez Jr., extensive work in Texas Czech, Polish, klezmer, and Yiddish music, and collaborations with artists including Andy Statman and Frank London’s Klezmer Brass All-Stars. He has also contributed to film and PBS documentaries.

Since stepping forward as a solo artist in 2015, Rubin has developed “Southern Americana from a Jewish POV”—a powerful combination of storytelling, clawhammer banjo, guitar, and songs that confront culture, history, identity, and politics. His acclaimed 2021 album The Triumph of Assimilation reached #13 on the Billboard Bluegrass Chart, followed by 2025’s Dispatches: Songs from a World Gone Mad. Now based in New Orleans, Rubin continues to tour nationally while remaining deeply involved in the region’s rich musical and Jewish cultural communities.
