Shakespeare in the Park: Romeo & Juliet
Romeo and Juliet
by William Shakespeare
Directed by Jenni Stewart
September 16-October 18, 2019
The prologue of Romeo and Juliet calls the title characters “star-crossed lovers”—and the stars do seem to conspire against these young lovers. The legendary tragedy is about two young star-crossed lovers whose deaths ultimately reconcile their feuding families. A friar secretly marries them, hoping to end the feud but the plan quickly spirals from high spirited to even higher stakes. It was among Shakespeare’s most popular plays during his lifetime.
Nestled in the eastern portion of Samuell-Grand Park next to the Tenison golf course, Samuell-Grand Amphitheater provides a wonderful park setting that can accommodate blankets, sand chairs, and lawn chairs. When the gates open, the lawn begins to fill with couples, families, and groups of friends with coolers and picnic baskets in tow! Come early to save your spot and set up your perfect picnic whether you prefer wine and cheese; sandwiches, chips and soda; or maybe take-out from your favorite restaurant! The picnic spreads at Samuell-Grand are as varied as the beautiful city we love.
Don’t forget bug spray (we are outside in Texas after all) and maybe an umbrella to shield yourself from the sun as it sets behind the park. But fear not, by showtime the entire lawn will be shaded as day turns to night.
