Prodigal Son
Join ATX and Fox for a screening of the pilot of the new FOX drama PRODIGAL SON. From Emmy Award-nominated executive producers Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter (“Riverdale,” “The Flash”) and writers Chris Fedak (“Deception,” “Chuck”) and Sam Sklaver (“Deception,” “Bored to Death”), PRODIGAL SON is a fresh take on a crime franchise with a provocative and outrageous lead character and a darkly comedic tone. MALCOLM BRIGHT (Tom Payne, “The Walking Dead”) has a gift. He knows how killers think, how their minds work. Why? Back in the 1990s, his father was one of the best, a notorious serial killer called “The Surgeon.” That’s why Bright is the best criminal psychologist around; murder is the family business. He will use his twisted genius to help the NYPD solve crimes and stop killers, all while dealing with a manipulative mother, annoyingly normal sister, a homicidal father still looking to bond with his prodigal son and his own constantly evolving neuroses.

Resistance, Inclusion, and Creating Authentic Muslim Narratives presented by MPAC’s Hollywood Bureau
Following the 2016 presidential election, U.S. culture saw a dangerous rise in anti-Muslim sentiment, rousing many in the entertainment industry to resist with a counter-narrative of inclusion. Within days MPAC (the Muslim Public Affairs Council) was flooded with inquiries requesting consultation on television shows with Muslim characters and recommendations for repped Muslim screenwriters to join their writers rooms. This panel of TV creatives, executives, and consultants discuss how they’ve impacted the industry in the last two years by raising the quantity and quality of Muslim characters; their efforts to increase visibility on and off-screen; and the forward-thinking importance of turning this moment into a sustained movement.

TV Under the Stars
We’re so excited to present TV Under the Stars, our annual Outdoor Screening & Music Showcase, at the Hotel San Jose on Friday, June 7! We’ll have live music, amazing snacks and drinks, community organizations, and a sun-down screening of a trio of NBC comedies BROOKLYN NINE-NINE, THE GOOD PLACE, and SUPERSTORE. We’re even more excited that Lauren Ash (Dina, SUPERSTORE) will be in attendance to introduce this awesome event, that is, as always, free and open to the public! In addition, this year ATX Festival is joining the Wear Orange campaign to honor all survivors of gun violence, remember those killed and declare that we must do more to reduce gun violence. Wear Orange began with the friends of Hadiya Pendleton, a 15-year-old Chicago high school student killed by gunfire. After her death, her classmates decided to honor her life by wearing orange – the color hunters wear in the woods to protect themselves and others. Since then, orange has been the defining color of the gun violence prevention movement. Learn more at wearorange.org and remember to wear orange to the event! This event is free and open to both ATX attendees and the general public. RSVP here!

UNPRODUCED: Live Script Reading & Look Inside the Pilot Process
Come hear the live pilot script reading of WANNABES an un-produced half hour dramedy pilot by Courtney and Edward Kirkpatrick, with ATX panelists as the special guest cast. Set in 1997 Fort Worth, Texas: WANNABES is the story of 18-year-old Chloe — a should-be rockstar with one foot out of the closet — and the band she all but wills into existence. It’s about growing up, chasing down your dreams, and being full of more dumb, wild hope then you’ll ever have again in your life. Following the reading, Courtney and Edward will be joined by additional showrunners for a conversation on writing pilots, the difference between writing on spec vs for hire, the process of changing a show's structure, and what happens after the script is complete.
