Art Exhibition "My Genesis" by Taylor Barnes (Free and Open to the Public)

Exhibition Opens on January 15th and Closes on February 14th. Gallery Hours: Monday through Friday, 9 am to noon and 1 -5 pm, with extended hours until 8 pm on Thursday and Friday. Saturday 11am – 3 pm, Closed on Sundays. The Denton Black Film Festival and UNT on the Square are pleased to announce an exhibition by fibers artist Taylor Barnes titled "My Genesis". It is an exhibition of large-scale charcoal works on cloth, screen-prints, and assemblage. Barnes work displays concepts of race, identity, and isolation. This show examines self-reflection and inevitable truths of being a black woman in America today. Genesis references a beginning. Barnes reflects on her life, sourcing from historical iconography and personal narrative to further interoperate these realities of her identity. PRE-FESTIVAL TALK: Thursday January 17, 2019 6:30-8:30 Taylor Barnes will lead a gallery talk about her work in "My Genesis." DENTON BLACK FILM FESTIVAL OPENING RECEPTION Wednesday January 23, 2019 6:30-8:30 Remarks at 7:00pm. AFTER THE FESTIVAL: Thursday January 31, 2019 6:30-8:30 Renowned quilt maker, Barbara McCraw and fibers artist Taylor Barnes will have a dialogue about their respective exhibitions, fiber as a medium, and the cross-generational subject matter in their work.

Taylor Barnes currently lives and works in Denton, TX. She anticipates the completion of her MFA in Fibers from the University of North Texas in May 2019. Ms. Barnes conducted a workshop called Compose a Loom at Eyeland Studio in Marshall, North Carolina in March 2018. Recent exhibitions include Full Circle at Erin Cluley Gallery, Interlude at the Greater Denton Arts Council, and an upcoming solo exhibition Read My Mind at 500X Gallery.
