About Miss Universe

Formed in 1992, Miss Universe crafted a style of power pop that split the difference between the punk sounds of Naked Raygun and the Descendents with the pop sounds of Blondie and the Go-Go's. The band's recorded output included a 7" single and a full length LP, Duh!, for Craig Koon and Frank Kozik's semi-legendary Austin label Rise Records, but they were probably best known for their spirited, high-energy performances at quintessential venues of the time including Liberty Lunch, Blue Flamingo, Electric Lounge, Emo's, Cavity Club, and Hole in the Wall. The band members went their separate ways in 1996 following an untimely cease and desist from the pageant's legal department (they were one week into a US tour promoting the new LP), briefly performing under the name Miss Galaxy.

About Gomez

Active starting in the early 1990s, the punk rock group's original lineup was Chepo Peña, Ryan McDaniel, Paul Newman and Keith Palumbo. Over an 8 year period the band recorded 2 full length LPs, 3 split 7" singles, and 2 7" singles, including a picture disc released by Scooch Pooch Records. The group eventually settled out of court with the British indie band Gomez over the use of their name, and since that time have performed on a few occasions as G.O.M.E.Z. or The Greatest American Gomez.
