Currently based in Gainesville, FL, USA, Susmita is known for her renderings of Indian semi-classical Hindi bhajans, ghazals and Bengali songs (ragpradhan and Nazrul-geeti). She is also popular for her repertoire of Bengali folk songs. In recent years, 2021-2022 she has produced three semi classical Bhajans, original ghazal singles, fusion music singles and modern Bengali singles with the music composed by Mr. Rajarshi Seal and Dev Gautam. Recently, she has also been included in a tribute CD entitled “SHINE ON – A TRIBUTE TO PETE HAM” by Y& T Studio in Miami Florida. The CD has been highly acclaimed by many music critics in USA. Susmita sang with Mr. Stanley Lynch, a founding member of the famous band of Tom Petty and translated part of the song into Bengali. This world version of the famous Badfinger band song “No matter what you Want” is loved by many. She has worked with many famous music studios in Kolkata. However, after COVID she mostly works with Pulp Audio in Gainesville, Florida, USA.
In 2020, she has produced three Thumri singles by Musiana Collectives. Before that she published two CDS by Asha Audio Nirvana (Sufi) and Bristi Badol Jhwar (Bengali modern songs). They were original music compositions by renowned tabla player Pt. Subhen Chatterjee. Two of her albums were of Najrul Geetees and the music was arranged by Pt. Debojyoti Bose. In 2017, Asha Audio has produced an album of hers “Bristi Badol Jhwar” in modern Bengali Songs. Songs are written by none other than Srijato. In 2018, Asha has produced another CD with Sufi songs “Nirvana”. Three top rated artists also sang with her on that CD Raghav, Monomoy and Rupankar. Gifted with a sonorous and melodious voice, Susmita was born in Calcutta (Kolkata), India. She was initiated into music by her mother, Late Mrs. Prabhati Roy, who was also a maternal aunt of the internationally famous Tabla Nawaaz Pandit Kumar Bose of Kolkata. Susmita took her formal guidance in vocal music from Acharya Jayanta Bose, an accomplished international vocalist, solo harmonium player and a table player. She has performed and received numerous awards for cultural performances throughout her school and college lives in Kolkata and professional life in USA. Notably, Susmita has performed in BangaSammelan, Bangamela in USA, Rotary Sadan, Birla Academy and ICCR in Kolkata, Poznan, Poland and Heartwood Soundstage in Gainesville Florida. Additionally, she has performed in esteemed television shows such as Good Morning Akash, Aj Sokaler Amontrone of Tara music and Good Morning Kolkata of R plus.
Apart from music, Susmita holds a doctoral degree in Statistics from the University of Georgia and is currently a tenured Full Professor of Biostatistics and a preeminence hire at the University of Florida. She is a fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA), elected member of the International Statistical Institute and an elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences (AAAS). Susmita is a past President of Caucus for Women in Statistics. She actively promotes women in STEM fields. Additionally, she is an elected Board of Trustees member at the International Indian Statistical Association.
