Michelle Campos, harpist presented by Garland Symphony Orchestra
The Garland Symphony Orchestra invites you to join us on February 13th at 7:30 pm at the Granville Arts Center for a jaw-dropping performance of Claude Debussy’s Danses Sacrée et Profane by the GSO’s own Principal Harp, and virtuoso, Michelle Campos.
In 1904, the legendary French impressionist composer, Claude Debussy, was commissioned by Gustave Lyon, of the famous Pleyel instrument company, to write a piece for his newly invented chromatic harp; a harp with extra chromatic strings rather than pedals. Danses Sacrée et Profane was the result of that commission and was premiered in Paris in November of 1904. Throughout the piece, we hear Debussy’s famous compositional language in his use of modality, extended chords, and chord planing that reminds the listener of some of his more famous works, such as The Sunken Cathedral and The Girl With The Flaxen Hair.
The program of the concert also features Wagner’s Overture to The Flying Dutchman, Ravel’s Valses nobles et sentimentales, Smetana’s Three Dances from The Bartered Bride, and Bartok’s Dance Suite.
