Darden Smith is an American singer-songwriter and creative artist based in Austin, Texas, known for blending folk, Americana, rock, pop, and country influences. He began writing songs as a child and released his debut album Native Soil in 1986, launching a prolific career that has spanned nearly four decades with more than a dozen critically acclaimed albums, including charting singles.
Smith’s work extends beyond music into writing, education, and visual art. He has authored books, composed a symphony, scored works for dance and theater, and co-founded the nonprofit SongwritingWith:Soldiers, which uses collaborative songwriting to help veterans and others share and heal through their stories.
Celebrated for his thoughtful lyrics and storytelling, Smith has toured internationally and been described as “one of the most respected American musicians working today.” He also served as the inaugural songwriter-in-residence at the University of Texas at Austin.
