Vitaly Starikov, piano & Bernstein's Symphonic Dances From West Side Story
The Garland Symphony Orchestra invites you to our next concert of the season on January 16th at 7:30pm at the Granville Arts Center. This concert features piano virtuoso, Vitaly Starikov, performing Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in F Major, as well as Leonard Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story.
Shostakovich wrote this concerto in 1957 for his son, Maxim, who premiered the work at his graduation from the Moscow Conservatory that same year. Shostakovich originally dismissed the work as having “no redeeming artistic merits”. However, the concerto is widely regarded as one of Shostakovich’s most popular works and currently sits at No. 6 on Classic FM’s Hall of Fame, a list of the top 300 most popular classical pieces.
The program of the concert also features Lehar’s Gold and Silver Waltz, Op. 79, Glière’s Russian Sailor’s Dance from The Red Poppy, and Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances from Prince Igor.
